Creating and managing transaction rules

Creating and Managing Transaction Rules

Teach your budget to work the way you do

Transaction rules let you automate how your spending is categorized so you don’t have to touch the same transaction more than once Lucky Friday gives you full control so the system learns from you not the other way around.

How to create rules based on keywords merchants or amount

You can create a rule from any transaction Just tap it then choose “Always categorize like this” From there you’ll decide what the rule looks for and where it should go.

You can base a rule on:

  • Keywords — like “Chevron” or “Trader Joe’s”
  • Exact merchant names — for tighter matching
  • Amount — for example anything under $5 from Apple goes to Subscriptions
  • A combination — for fine-tuned control like “Target” + over $100 goes to Household Projects

Rules can be as broad or as specific as you want and you can apply them to main categories or subcategories.

Tips for efficient rule management

  • Start small — Create rules for your most common transactions first
  • Use keywords instead of exact names when merchants format things weirdly or inconsistently
  • Avoid duplicate rules — If two rules match the same transaction only the top one runs
  • Keep your rule list clean — You can reorder edit or delete anytime from the Rules screen
  • Use rule previews — When creating a rule Lucky Friday shows a sample of what will match so you don’t misfire

Over time your rule set will do most of the heavy lifting so you can just check in and make tweaks instead of sorting every line.
